Les Hopis sont un peuple vivant dans la plus vaste réserve indienne des Etats Unis, dans la région aride de l'Arizona. Ils sont connus entre autres pour les dessins de sable faits par des guérisseurs ou chamanes traditionnels pour guérir des personnes malades. Ces images sont issues de la cosmogonie et la mythologie précomlombienne encore vivante et conservée dans la mémoire des clans et tribus indiens.

Le sable coloré est versé avec soin de la main sur le sol en présence de la personne malade, l'officiant psalmodie des prières et invoque l'aide des esprits guérisseurs du monde invisible. Après la cérémonie, la maladie doit être prise par l'image qui est alors effacée et le sable est jeté. On n'a pas le droit de photographier ces images ni d'assister à un rituel sans y être invité. Des artistes créent des tableaux du même genre mais ils font exprès de faire des erreurs dans les couleurs ou les personnages pour respecter le caractère sacré et magique des images de sable.

Sand painting is a ritual ceremony in which a « medecine man » will design a picture on holy ground using coloured sands. The fine sand is trickled carefully from the hand to create codified designs with religious significance, prayers will be chanted while working. The best known and most complex tradition of sand painting in the Americas is linked with the Hopi and Navajo mythology.

The ceremony is made according to traditional beliefs in order to heal a sick person. The Holy People will be invoked, invisible spiritual beings that can help when asked. During the healing process the painting is supposed to take away the sickness, the picture will then be destroyed and the sand thrown away. Sand paintings can be fixed and sold as art objects imitating traditional style, but ritual paintings will not be photographed nor kept after the ceremony has been performed.

The technique of sand painting with ritual meaning exists in Australia among the aboriginal peoples and in Buddhist temples in Tibet, where elaborate mandala pictures are made with coloured powders.
