A painted portrait of a Native American woman in a Classical 19th century pose, without objects symbolical of cultural background. Her bared shoulder and her back covered with a blanket, her unsmiling melancholy and yet noble face will evoke in a discreet manner the tragedy (or crime) that her people suffered after the Indian Removal Act forced the Five Civilized Tribes of the SouthEast to leave their homelands to the arid new territory of Oklahoma west of the Mississippi. The deportation in improvised conditions was a terrible fiasco that resulted in unbearable hardships still recalled bitterly nowadays.
