A l'occasion du cinqcentenaire de la découverte de l'Amérique par Christophe Colomb 1492 – 1992 on reparla de l'histoire des 500 ans et en particulier des Indiens. De nos jours, les Indiens des Etats Unis ne sont plus des étrangers vaincus mais des citoyens avec une histoire et une héritage culturel particuliers. Les réserves qui autrefois étaient comme des prisons où ils étaient assignés à résidence, souvent très loin de leurs terres ancestrales, sont des bases politiques pour affirmer l'identité de peuples ou de tribus. On a conçu un drapeau, on imprime des passeports et on enseigne la langue des ancêtres, on place des plaques à l'entrée de la réserve et on ouvre un site Internet pour avoir une présence visible dans le monde entier.

Les Indiens d'Amérique que certains souhaitaient faire disparaître comme le bison, le pigeon migrateur ou le castor, sont vivants et bien présents de nos jours.
