The rugby union (rugby à XV) section of the Bayonne rowing club became French champion in 1914. Bayonne was a seaside resort much favoured with British visitors enjoying the healthy Atlantic breeze. These longtime residents were keen on sports they liked at home like horse racing, running, tennis, rowing or football, and initiated clubs that were quickly popular among the local population.
