Admission ticket to Colombes stadium in 1922.
The ticket bears the logo of the French Rugby Union (The Oval Ball and The Gallic Cock) with its Parisian address (central 1st district) recognized as useful to the public in 1922. The admission fees were paid to the Union. Players had their expenses paid by the Union but did not earn a salary for playing. Rugby was until the 1990s a purely amateur sport upholding strict ideals of non professionalism. This was in keeping with its origin in schools as educational exercise and as wholesome pastime for wealthy gentlemen. Nowadays rugby has become a professional sport with a class of paid players and sponsored tournaments sold to global TV audiences.
