A movie house called grandly Rex theatre, the blackpainted front is a less noble affair, two posters announce coming shows, a recent boxing match for the heavyweight title and a western.
Joe Louis VS Bob Pastor in Detroit. Joe Louis was the first African American to achieve the status of a nationwide hero within the United States, he had a reputation as an honest, hardworking fighter at a time when the sport was dominated by corruption and gambling. He was an acceptable role model to the censors of what colored people needed to watch.
The movie Trigger Smith starring Jack Randall is a low budget B series western made in 1939. Although many of the historical cowboys were African Americans or First Nations Indians, the set roles in Hollywood westerns did not give them parts to identify with until late in the 1970s.
