An illustration of the consequences of segregation. Public lavatories have to be provided to everybody, toilets are a space where everyone has the same needs and that you cannot dispense with. Fresh drinking water is offered equally but separately. Next to the gender separation between men and women, the color bar adds a second tier, thus doubling the expense in facilities. But there is only one entrance for each sex, is there an inside overseer to control that the patrons follow correctly the regulations ?

The argument of separate and equal development was developed in South Africa under the segregation system called apartheid to justify discrimination on racial lines as a fair regulation.

Les toilettes publiques sont des services nécessaires pour les besoins naturels de chacun. La ségrégation liée à la couleur de peau indiquant une origine servile s’applique ici aussi, en plus de la distinction faite entre hommes et femmes. Même l’accès à l’eau potable est séparé règlementairement alors même que l’eau vient de la même source. Une pancarte indique ici : Colored (Réservé aux gens de couleur).
